For 75% of Croatians, a Dignified Salary Starts From 2,000 Euros

October the 8th, 2026 – For 75% of Croatians, a dignified salary starts from 2,000 euros, but the reality of what salaries are actually paid out in Croatia is starkly different.

The topic of the average wage in Croatia is a frequent topic, and we talk about the minimum wage most often when another increase is announced. The real question for many, however, is just how much should a Croatian wage be to enable workers a fully dignified life? What some would be one in which, after paying rent, utilities and food, there remains room for socialising, going to the cinema, an annual holiday or putting some savings away for a rainy day. A life in which an unexpected expense does not mean that we have to spend the rest of the month counting every single euro.

Alma Career Croatia, the international company known for the MojPosao/MyJob brand, addressed precisely this question in a new survey in which more than 500 people participated. Poslovni reports that just two years ago participants said that a dignified wage should not be less than 1,500 euros. Given the constant increases in the cost of living, we checked where they set that boundary today.

Is 1,500 euros enough for a month, but not for a peaceful life? The minimum wage in Croatia currently amounts to 1,050 euros gross, or around 800 euros net, depending on the worker’s tax circumstances. But the legal minimum and the amount that survey participants consider sufficient for a dignified life are clearly quite distant, because none of them chose a wage lower than 1,000 euros. The next range did not receive many more votes either. Only 3% of participants believe that it is possible to live with dignity on a wage between 1,000 and 1,500 euros.

A somewhat larger number, approximately every fifth person (22%), chooses the range from 1,500 to 2,000 euros. For them 1,500 euros is the lower limit which, with inflation and rising living costs, still leaves the possibility of a life above merely covering obligations. Everything below that, they believe, means living ‘from month to month’. Everything below 2,000 euros is not enough for the vast majority.

The largest number of participants, 50% of them, place a dignified wage in the range from 2,000 to 2,500 euros. However, they note that even that amount does not tell the whole story. A lot depends on whether we have solved our housing situation or whether every month we have to set aside money from the same wage for rent or a loan. For every fourth person (25%) the boundary is even higher. A dignified life in Croatia, they emphasise, requires a monthly wage of at least 2,500 euros.

Compared with the survey from 2024, the change is visible. Then the largest number of participants, 47% of them, chose the range from 1,500 to 2,000 euros, while a third selected amounts from 2,000 to 2,500 euros. Today precisely that higher range gathers half of the answers.
