August the 28th, 2024 – As the fight against food waste continues on a global scale, the anti-food waste Crumbs app is set to arrive in Croatia, where food can be purchased for 50% less.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, over 280,000 tonnes of food, equal to 71 kilograms per inhabitant, are thrown away in the Republic of Croatia annually. Almost 40 percent of it is edible food, which was the reason for the creation of the Crumbs app (crumbs.hr).
Using the Crumbs app, Croatian users will be able to search for and find food that has not been sold during the day in stores, bakeries, restaurants, fruit shops and other catering establishments. They’ll then be free to buy it at a significantly lower price.
The Crumbs app works so that users on the platform can choose from so-called surprise packages containing surplus food from that day and pick them up at a store or other such facility with at least a 50 percent discount.
“The contents of the package aren’t completely known because the facilities themselves don’t know what food will be left at the end of the day, but users can be sure that what they buy is within its shelf life and with discounts of 50 to 70 percent applied. The goal of the Crumbs app is to reduce Croatia’s food waste and connect users with all those who sell said food. All in all, this will contribute to a much more sustainable society,” explained Antonio Matušan, founder of the Crumbs.hr app/platform.
The Crumbs app currently has about fifty sales locations across the City of Zagreb, and their number is growing day by day. The owners of all kinds of establishments selling food can see numerous opportunities because, in addition to not having to throw away unsold food, they generate additional income and expand their customer base.
The application will also offer other products with a short shelf life, such as fresh flowers. The Crumbs app will start operating in Croatia in September of this year and will be free for users. In time, it will also offer delivery so that customers will not need to pick up the products in person at specified locations.
