August the 30th, 2026 – Dubrovnik Airport no longer requires liquid and electronic removal from hand luggage, making the security process much more smooth.
Dubrovnik Airport has begun introducing a new generation of technology for the security screening of passengers and hand luggage. These are devices that enable a three-dimensional display of luggage contents and a simpler, faster passage through the security screening process. Sinisa Malus reports for Poslovni that the southernmost Croatian airport is currently the only one in the country using this advanced technology. The new security screening equipment includes six devices for screening hand luggage and six scanners for passenger security screening.

The first device is already in operation, and the remaining five will be installed by the beginning of December. Once all devices are installed, the entire passenger and hand luggage security screening system at Ruđer Bošković Airport will be equipped with the new generation of technical equipment. “By introducing this technology, we want to further improve and raise the level of aviation security protection and elevate the level of service and the overall passenger experience. The new devices enable higher-quality luggage screening, and for passengers they bring a simpler procedure because they will no longer need to remove liquids and electronic devices from their hand luggage. Together with the passenger security scanners, the entire process will be faster, more efficient and with less physical contact,” explained Viktor Šober, Director of Dubrovnik Airport.

This brand new equipment enables more effective detection of prohibited and dangerous items, while bringing passengers a faster passage through screening. The new C3 EDS CB technology brings concrete changes for passengers. With these scanners, it is no longer necessary to remove liquids, nor laptops, tablets, mobile phones and other larger electronic devices from hand luggage. Unlike conventional X-ray machines, C3 EDS CB devices create a three-dimensional image of the luggage contents and enable a more detailed inspection and more effective recognition of prohibited and dangerous items. This simultaneously speeds up passage through control and reduces passenger delays.
Part of the modernisation also includes new scanners for passenger security screening. During screening, the passenger stands in the device for a few seconds, and the system automatically alerts security staff if it detects an area that requires additional checking. The operator sees a generic outline of a human silhouette with any marked areas that need further inspection. The new equipment enables more effective detection of prohibited and dangerous items, while bringing passengers a faster passage through the security screening process, less waiting and less need to remove items from hand luggage. With this modernisation, Ruđer Bošković Airport is raising security screening standards and introducing technology used in the most modern European and world airports.

Back in June, Dubrovnik Airport ranked second in traffic among Croatian airports, behind Split, with 462 thousand passengers, which is also an increase of 3.3 percent on a monthly basis, while a slightly higher growth of 4.6 percent was recorded in the first half of the year, with 1.2 million passengers. In July, it served just over 558.5 thousand passengers, almost 18 thousand more than in the same month of 2025. The airport recently completed its Master Plan for the period from 2025 to 2045, which sets the framework for the next two decades of infrastructure development and capacity growth.
In general, they are satisfied with the tourist season thus far down in Dubrovnik. This year’s three-millionth overnight stay in the Dubrovnik area was recorded on 22 August, one day earlier than in 2025, reported the Tourist Board of the City of Dubrovnik. “This confirms stable tourism results and the continuous recognition of Dubrovnik on the international tourism market,” they stated from the Dubrovnik Tourist Board. According to data from the eVisitor system, more than 25 thousand guests are currently visiting Dubrovnik. From the 1st of January to the 22nd of August, a total of 931,660 tourists stayed in Dubrovnik, who achieved 3,000,099 overnight stays.
