A decade of philosophy at the University of Split.

The tenth birthday of the Faculty of Philosophy in Split, which has become a respectable institution with as many as 1,256 students, was a great opportunity to honour all those who have given their contribution so that Split could get this extremely important university institution, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on November 1, 2015.

The awards and recognitions were presented to Josip Milat, the first dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, professors Ivan Mimica, Šime Pilić, Slobodan Uzelac, Berislav Žarnić and Ivan Pavić, a former rector of the University of Split who gave great contribution to the establishment of the new faculty.

Summing up the history of the institution, Aleksandar Jakir, current dean of the Faculty, said that these are just some of the most prominent people responsible for the great ten years of the Faculty which is by almost any criteria one of the most successful components of the University of Split. “Even though our Faculty is celebrating its only tenth birthday, it should be noted that this year we mark the 70th anniversary of the High School of Pedagogy, of which we are a legal successor. That institution, which was formed after the war to educate teachers, was established by giants like Ivan Supek and Vladimir Nazor”, Jakir said.

Currently, the main problem of the Faculty is the fact that the students and professors are scattered in six locations but, according to Šimun Anđelinović, rector of the University of Split, that should change very soon. “As soon as students move into the building known as ‘Three Faculties’, the students and professors of the Faculty of Philosophy will get a better temporary home. We have saved the building permit for their facility on campus, and we hope that we will, with the help of the City of Split, build a new building for them as soon as possible”, the rector said.

In addition to numerous guests, the ceremony was attended by Damir Boras, rector of the University of Zagreb. He stressed that the Faculties of Philosophy in Split and Zagreb represent the pillars of humanism in Croatia and has called for unity among all public universities.
