While sailing between the islands of Brač and Hvar, the yacht, with three people on board, including a kid, caught fire.
A family of three has been successfully rescued from a burning yacht, reports the National Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Rijeka).
“Immediately after receiving the emergency call, the MRCC Rijeka organised a coordinated rescue operation in cooperation with the Harbour Master’s Office in Split, that is, with the Port of Milna, whose officers, along with SeaHelp crew who were on standby, set sail to the indicated position of the yacht. At the scene of the incident, officials of the Milna port docked alongside the 16-metre-long motor yacht. There was no open fire on the boat, but the smoke was coming out the vessel’s engine room, where two propulsion engines are situated. They evacuated an unharmed family of three, Austrian citizens with a three-year-old kid, and at 6 P.M. transported them to Milna where shortly afterwards the damaged yacht was moored,” the MRCC Rijeka said in the statement.
By examining the damaged yacht, the officials of the port of Milna found out that one of the two propulsion engines had ignited, fortunately, not polluting the sea. Given that the yacht did not have any leaks and that one of the engines remained undamaged, the “Caro” yacht manager was allowed to board the boat and sail off to Milna on his own, but accompanied by the vessel of Milna port. Milna port officers are still examining what had caused the Austrian yacht to catch fire.
