August the 11th, 2023 – Yes, the Croatian Adriatic Sea is stunning, crystal clear, alluring, sparkling, divine… I could go on and on with buzzwords. But how clean is it really? Here’s how your favourite Croatian beaches match up with others up and down the coast.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Istria County’s Teaching Institute for Public Health recently conducted its sixth sea sampling of the sea this year in the period from August the 1st to the 7th. In total, more than 217 measuring points were sampled on the beaches from Savudrija to Brestova.
During the process of said sampling, both the air and sea temperatures were recorded. The sea temperature ranges from 25.0 ºC to 28.0 ºC, while the air temperature ranges from 20 ºC to 30 ºC.
Just as one might expect, the sea quality ranked as excellent on 90 percent of the samples taken
Based on the individual results of microbiological indicators testing at 197 measuring points, so in 90.8% of the samples taken, excellent sea water quality for swimming was recorded at fifteen different measuring points.
Rain and adverse weather conditions had an effect
The results of the sampling taken across Istria indicate what was generally expected, and that is that there was reduced quality in certain locations due to heavy rains and winds. The violent storms much of the country has been experiencing over the last few weeks causes an inflow of water from the land and as a result, the mixing/raising of sea sediment. This has been quite clearly seen and noted during this sampling period, they explained from Istria County.
Blue, green and yellow
Based on the results of testing microbiological indicators for individual sampling, if it’s swimming you’re interested in, then the sea on most favourite Croatian beaches in the area has been classified as excellent and marked with a circle symbol on the map in blue. Decent sea water on some favourite Croatian beaches has been marked on the map in green, and satisfactory sea water is marked in yellow.

Based on the results of microbiological indicators, the individual, annual and final rating of the sea water for swimming is determined and then published. The data is published on the Internet through the online application of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, which was developed and continues to be maintained by the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries from Split.
