More Croatian wine success at Zagreb VINOcom.
Vina Croatia Vina Mosaica is a project to raise awareness about the quality of Croatian wines, sponsored by the Croatian Chamber of Commerce.
As part of the project, combined with the jubilee tenth Zagreb VINOcom festival of wine and food, Vina Croatia held the first Croatian Wine Competition on November 28, 2015.
While the wines being judged were exclusively Croatian, the judges were very international, including the Englist Master (Mistress?) of Wine Angela Muir, the famous Dutch oenophile Paul Robert Blom, and our own Željko Suhadolnik, editor of the ‘Svijet u Čaši’ magazine and author of the ‘Suhiučaši’ blog.
In the picture below you can see members of the Jury team number 1: President prof. Edo Maletić, Zoltan Gyorffy from Hungary, Iztok Klenar from Slovenija, Paul Robert Blom from the Netherlands, and Željko Suhadolnik.
Many wines were tasted by several jury teams, and each judge had to rank them. Then the top ranked went on to the next round, and so on. Gold and silver medals were awarded, and finally after three days of onerous tasting, the champions in each category were selected.
Champions:
Sparkling: Vuglec Breg Extra Brut 2013
Red: Crvik Pomet 2011
White non-aromatic: Graševina Iločki podrumi 2014
White aromatic: Iločki podrumi Traminac 2013
Stickies: The dessert wines were so good, two champions were announced! Both are ice wines:
Kutjevo Traminac Ledena Berba 2011 and
Đurinski Ledeno Vino 2012
Congratulations to the winners, this humble reporter can vouch that they really are great!
Coupled with the Croatian wines taking the top three white wine spots and one of the three red in the Wine Stars competition, it is great to see more and more international recognition of the long and rich Croatian wine tradition.
