May the 15th, 2025 – The very first electric battery train in Croatia is now in operation. The train is worth over seventeen million euros.
We all know that train travel in Croatia isn’t something anyone who knows much about it would bother recommending. The infrastructure is old, the trains are slow, and there’s been plenty of jokes made about the entire system over the years.
That’s all slowly but surely altering, however, with numerous investments being poured into the railway infrastructure of the country. The latest investment, which reaches over seventeen million euros, involves the very first electric battery train in Croatia.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, HŽ putnički prijevoz (passenger transport) has now put the very first electric battery train in Croatia into function. The impressive vehicle was produced as part of a wider project entitled “The application of green technologies in railway passenger transport”. The total value of the project stands at a whopping 17.1 million euros.
The project is being financed from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) for the years 2021-2026, and as part of it, a battery train and six charging stations were produced. The train will run along the Zagreb – Bjelovar – Zagreb route.
Otherwise, the very first electric battery train in Croatia has 157 seats and 158 standing places. It is properly equipped with three pairs of double doors, ramps for wheelchair users, a bicycle storing space. It also boasts an audio-visual passenger information system and video surveillance, and passengers on the train are provided with free internet access.
On the electrified part of the railway network, the new train reaches a maximum speed of 160 kilometres per hour, and on the non-electrified part of the rail network, 120 kilometres per hour.
