February the 2nd, 2025 – Brand new gas and oil deposits have been found in Croatia during research carried out by INA and Vermilion Zagreb Exploration.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the very first phase of exploration in the SAVA-07 onshore block, which is being carried out by Vermilion Zagreb Exploration and INA, has been completed with exceptional success. That success can be clearly measured by the discovery of hydrocarbons in all four wells. INA added that testing was successfully completed for three wells, while the final testing of the fourth well remains in progress.

Most of the research area (SA-07) is located in Sisak-Moslavina County. The Zbjegovača-1I well discovered oil and gas, with daily production capacities of 50 cubic metres of oil and 7,240 cubic metres of gas achieved. The Međurić-1I well came upon several gas deposits with a capacity of 129,746 cubic metres of gas per day, while the Gojlo-1J well confirmed the discovery of gas with a production capacity of 82,293 cubic metres per day during testing. Significant gas potential in deeper reservoirs was found at the Piljenice-1 well, and testing is still ongoing at that location.

Thus far, commercial discovery reports for gas and oil deposits in Croatia have been submitted to the Hydrocarbons Agency for the Zbjegovača-1I, Međurić-1I and Gojlo-1J wells. Back in March 2024, INA and Vermilion Zagreb Exploration signed a cooperation agreement on the SAVA-07 exploration block. Vermilion retained a 60 percent stake and remained the operator of the block, while INA took over a 40 percent stake. INA Exploration and Production Operations Director Josip Bubnić emphasised that signing that partnership agreement with Vermilion was a major step forward in expanding INA’s exploration portfolio across the Republic of Croatia.

“We’re very pleased with the drilling results so far, which confirm the correctness of this decision. Our focus will be on the efficient development of the field, while exploiting existing synergies and INA’s infrastructure nearby. As partners, we’re going to continue to work closely with regulatory authorities to start production from the new discoveries of gas and oil deposits in Croatia as soon as possible. That way we’ll make a firm contribution to Croatia’s energy security,” Bubnić emphasised.

Marius Nowak, CEO of Vermilion Zagreb Exploration, also believes that the results of the aforementioned exploration drilling programme in Croatia are very encouraging. They have successfully confirmed multiple production zones and reduced the risks of future development and exploration activities in four separate areas of the SAVA-07 block.

In the future, the partners will work on a joint field development plan to accelerate the start of production and leverage existing INA’s nearby capacities. Both companies also agreed to continue with the second phase of exploration, with new exploration activities expected throughout 2025 and 2026.
