Deputy Mayor Marko Boras Mandić claims that Rijeka Airport has the greatest potential for growth in the country.
As Poslovni Dnevnik reported on the 4th of August, 2017, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Prefect Zlatko Komadin said on Thursday that the goal of Rijeka Airport was to double its traffic from the current 150,000 passengers to 300,000 per year, with the desire to increase to half a million passengers annually through joint advertising audits, airport subsidies in Croatia, and an alternative airport model and network.
A working meeting on the development and the positioning of Rijeka Airport was held on Thursday as a preparation for a meeting on the topic with representatives of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Tourism.
Deputy Mayor Marko Boras Mandić assessed the situation and believes that Rijeka Airport has the greatest potential for growth in the whole of Croatia. “With a few measures to be agreed in the short term, it is possible to increase traffic to the target, which is 500,000 passengers,” stated Boras Mandić.
He stated that the revision of the Public Service Obligation can bring Rijeka Airport up to Split’s level because Rijeka currently has only 3500 subsidised seats, whereas Split and Dubrovnik have 200,000 plus.
As stated, a joint venture measures may increase the number of passengers, adding a further 200,000 and see Rijeka Airport become a viable alternative to Zagreb Airport.
In this fiscal year, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County has allocated HRK 600,000 for investments in airport infrastructure, with plans to invest a total of HRK 50 million.
“New lines from Rijeka Airport and the connection of Kvarner with other destinations will contribute to the increase in tourist traffic.” said the Director of the Kvarner Tourist Board, Irena Peršić Živadinov.
