March the 7th, 2026 – Croatia’s remarkable unicorn Infobip and the European Space Agency have joined forces to further improve an asteroid impact warning system through real-time notifications.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the global cloud communications platform Infobip, which draws its origins from Vodnjan in Istria, has partnered with the European Space Agency (ESA). Together, they will enhance the agency’s asteroid impact notification system using Infobip’s own Voice API solutions. This partnership has significantly improved communications, because by using Infobip’s platform, ESA staff automatically receive real-time phone notifications, enabling immediate warnings of potential asteroid impacts and faster decision-making in highly critical situations.

Understanding the trajectories of asteroids, especially those approaching Earth, is critical and very time-sensitive. Since an asteroid impact wiped out more or less all of life on Earth 65 million years ago, it’s crucial for ESA to identify absolutely all hazardous asteroids in order to better understand their physical characteristics and the possible consequences of an impact on our planet.

Until now, ESA staff were notified of such events via email, often when they were offline or unavailable. By integrating Infobip’s Voice API solutions, the European Space Agency’s asteroid monitoring and warning system – Meerkat Asteroid Guard, can now send alerts via calls in real time, regardless of time of day and location. This very significantly speeds up the process of notifying those who need to know with timely and invaluable information about potential asteroid impacts to prevent possible risks to the planet.

“This new partnership between Infobip and the European Space Agency allows us to respond more quickly and efficiently to potential near-miss asteroid impacts, ensuring the collection of crucial information to better understand these natural threats. Receiving instant warnings has improved our ability to respond in a timely manner and our ability to study these events,” said Richard Moissl, who is at the helm of the European Space Agency’s Planetary Defense Office.

After a very successful testing phase, the voice call system was found to work in 100% of applicable cases. The key results showed that rapid warnings of two predicted high-probability asteroid impacts resulted in phone calls being made within five minutes of detection of potential impacts. Although the events didn’t cause any damage because the object in question was very small, the European Space Agency was able to collect valuable scientific data in a timely manner.

“Infobip’s platform has been built to ensure that critical communications reach their recipients without delay. By enabling the reception of instant voice calls, we’re helping the European Space Agency make faster decisions when literally every single little second counts. This partnership demonstrates how mobile tech and instant messaging applications can support scientific goals and protect the planet,” condluded Mirza Hadžić, Sales Director for Europe at Infobip.
