October the 31st, 2024 – The beautiful island of Krk has become the very first Croatian island to be awarded a prestigious Zero Waste certificate by Zero Waste Europe.
As Morski writes, the Zero Waste Europe network (Mission Zero Academy MiZA) awarded Krk the Zero Waste certificate. It did the same to the municipalities of Baška, Dobrinje, Malinska-Dubašnica, Omišlja, Punat and Vrbnik, where the utility company Ponikve eko otok (eco island) Krk provides its services.
This recognition means that the island as a whole has earned the prestigious Zero Waste certificate, Green Action (Zelena Akcija) reports.
“The certificate is recognition for our many years of effort in improving the waste management system and motivation for further work. We want the quality of life and environmental protection on our island to be at the highest possible level,” said Ivan Jurešić, director of the utility company and coordinator for the implementation of the Zero Waste plan on the island of Krk.
The local self-government units on Krk managed to achieve 58 percent of separately collected waste and a 22 percent lower amount of mixed waste per inhabitant compared to Croatia’s current national average.
It’s also worth noting that in this very same regard, Krk was also awarded prizes as part of the “Blue bag against garbage” project and the Art competition called “Creativity against garbage”. These are projects that reward eco-activists and artists who have contributed to the preservation of the island’s overall environment with their work.
