June the 16th, 2023 – Lepoglava wine has once again been awarded, this time at the Decanter World Wine awards for 2023.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Lepoglava wine has been placed firmly on the map once again after being awarded at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023 in London, as Rijeka-based portal Novi list reports.
Grasevina and Silvanac Zeleni (Silvaner)
Grasevina 2021 and Silvanac zeleni 2022 were both awarded bronze at the 20th anniversary Decanter World Wine Awards in the British capital city and were evaluated with 88 points. This is the third time wine from this part of of the country has received this prestigious award. Back in 2021, Grasevina from Lepoglava took home the bronze award, while in 2022, Grasevina, Rhine Riesling and Pinot Sivi also all received the same award.
Fantastic recognition for Lepoglava
The Decanter award is great representation and recognition for this region and an undoubted confirmation of the quality of what is produced there. Despite being chronically overshadowed by most other regions of the country which produce wine, there’s more than lace being made in Lepoglava and international awards such as this one allow greater attention to be paid to parts of Croatia which don’t get a great deal of the spotlight.
The wine is made by prisoners, and the prison is something Lepoglava is somewhat famous for. The prisoners all participate in the wine-making processes. Within the prison system, they have the opportunity to train for professions such as fruit growers, beekeepers, assistant cooks and waiters for when they’re released back into society.
An incentive for more and more investment
The awards most recently received are an additional incentive for the Penitentiary in Lepoglava to continue investing in wine production and the prisoners in training them for a life outside the prison gates in an industry that is both generally well paid and productive.
