September the 2nd, 2026 – A petition has been launched by dissatisfied local people following the removal of a favourite Lokrum nudist beach.
The decision to remove the signs marking out the way to a favourite Lokrum nudist beach has sparked a wave of reactions among residents of Dubrovnik. Morski reports that after the signs were taken down, a group of people decided to take concrete steps and launched a petition calling for a solution that would allow the long-standing practice to continue.
“With this petition, we wish to encourage those responsible to find a legal framework for the lawful continuation of the tradition of naturism on the island of Lokrum. Back during the mid-1960s, with the establishment of the Lokrum Reserve, signs designating a swimming area for nudists were put up by the institution above the cliffs on the eastern side of the island of Lokrum.”
As a reminder, the public first learned about the removal of the signs from a reaction by Professor Igor Legaz, who confirmed on the 26th of August that the signs pointing to the Lokrum nudist beach had been removed, noting that the nudist beach in that area had operated contrary to the applicable regulations.
“This concerns a stretch of coastline about 300 metres long, characterised by a series of large natural stone slabs, which has been under general use since yesterday. For that reason, I thank the Management of the Lokrum Reserve and the director for the step they have taken, because that ‘special-purpose beach’ on the island of Lokrum had in any case been established contrary to the provision of Article 80, paragraph 2, point 2 of the Maritime Domain and Seaports Act,” Legaz said.
While part of the public welcomes the alignment of the situation on the ground with the Maritime Domain Act, the initiators of the petition emphasise the historical and cultural significance of that section of the coast and appeal to the competent institutions to find an appropriate model that would allow the lawful retention of the naturist tradition on the beautiful island of Lokrum.
