Meet the Kings of Accidental Croatian Souvenir Sales.
In an age of globalisation, one of the huge potential growth areas for Croatian tourism and business is in the promotion of its indigenous, home-made products. There is so much quality, innovation and excellent natural materials, and the ‘Made in Croatia’ section on TCN is among my favourite, as we are proud to showcase Croatian excellence at every opportunity (and if you have a Croatian innovation you would like featured contact us on [email protected]).
Take the winemakers for example. With 130 indigenous varieties, the emergence of Croatian wine on the global scene is a breath of fresh air for wine lovers still looking for new experiences in an increasingly globalised world. For wine, read cuisine, artisan products, design. So many products that are attractive to tourists, and so the concept of a shop selling the best of Croatia makes perfect sense.
All good so far.
Put it in a prime location, such as the Split Riva, by Diocletian’s Palace, the World Heritage Site.
Great location.
Now that you have the tourists’ attention in such a great spot, with such a great concept and hundreds of products to sell, what special Croatian products would you display in the eye-catching window to entice people in to explore the very best of Croatia?
Our Man in Split walked past on March 8, 2016 in search of a nice surprise for his lady on the occasion of International Women’s Day, sadly without camera, and was more than a little disheartened to find the prime window spots taken by those famous Croatian brands of Mozart chocolates, Remy Martin and Ferrero Rocher, the only products on display.
The Best of Croatia?
TCN sent our man back this morning to capture the evidence for this article, and he was a little surprised to see that some of the prime items had been changed. The Remy was still there, but what Croatian goodness had made it to the coveted window spot and a view out to the Adriatic?
La Perla Bianca chocolates from Italy and some rather average-looking Easter eggs, origin unknown.
Only in Croatia…
Or perhaps there is something in the air on the Split Riva, for the Kings of Accidental Croatian Souvenir Sales are just a few doors away from the Kings of Accidental Train Information.
Croatia’s hard-working producers deserve better.
Our Man in Split will be monitoring the display over the coming days to see what other international brands are being promoted in the name of the Best of Croatia.
