ZAGREB, Jan 14, 2018 – This year, the carnival in the seaport of Rijeka will be shorter than usual given that Lent, a six-week period ahead of Easter, starts on 14 February as Easter is celebrated on 1 April.
The festivities in the run-up to Lent will begin in Rijeka on 17 January, on the Day of Saint Anthony of the Desert, with the traditional ceremony of raising the Pust, the carnival doll, and the carnival will last until Shrove Tuesday, 13 February.
The children’s Carnival march is set for 27 January, while the grand masquerade parade will be on 11 February.
Other events such as the election of the Carnival Queen, concerts, and humanitarian functions both in Rijeka and other nearby towns, will be organised during this pre-Lenten season.
