August 28, 2024 – On Monday night, lightning strikes caused major fire in several places above Žrnovnica, a small village located just outside of Split. It was a dramatic night, where even the Croatian Army’s rocket base was threatened at one point, but the situation is currently under control.
Among the fans of the epic drama, Žrnovnica is known for the two locations where Game of Thrones was filmed. One was the quarry which served as the entrance to Meereen, while the local river and watermill were sites of Daario Naharis’ legendary battle as well as Missandei’s bathing scene.
In real life, Žrnovnica has been unfortunate to experience two major fires in only 7 years. Here is some of the key info, as listed by Jutarnji:

As for the three firefighters who were injured while fighting the fire in Žrnovnica – one has a sprained knee, another has a minor eye injury, while the third sprained his leg, the Split County Fire Department reported on Wednesday.
The Croatian Firefighting Association announced that 700 hectares of grass, low vegetation and forest have been burned. So far, four Canadiairs and one air tractor have participated in extinguishing the fire.
As reported by the Chief Fire Commander of the Republic of Croatia Slavko Tucaković on Wednesday morning, the firefighters managed to defend all the buildings in Podstrana and Donje Sitno. Since this morning there has been no open flame and the burned parts are being rehabilitated. He called on citizens to follow the instructions of the competent services until the fire is completely extinguished.
The fire in an open field in Kotlenice, Dugopolje, which broke out yesterday, is under contol, reported the local fire department. The action included a total of 16 firefighters with six fire trucks from DVD Dugopolje, Klis, Dicmo and Zagora, as well as two firefighting aircraft Air tractor.
They add that fires were extinguished in the areas of Perun in Gornja Podstrana and on Križnjak in Plano. According to the data from the State Fire Operations Center, a total of 140 fire interventions were recorded in the last 24 hours, in which 168 firefighting organizations with a total of 450 firefighters and 168 fire engines participated.
