July the 25th, 2025 – A train is planned to run from the capital’s main train station to Zagreb Airport as a solution to the currently very unfortunate connection between the Croatian Air Force (HRZ) fighter aircraft hangar and the runway at Zagreb Airport.
As Poslovni Dnevnik/Tomislav Krasnec/VL writes, as stated, a favourable new solution has been agreed upon to repair the currently very unfortunate connection between the Croatian Air Force (HRZ) fighter aircraft hangar and the runway at Zagreb Airport. The new Rafale connector will be constructed as part of the project to connect the Airport (MZLZ) with the Main Station in Zagreb.
When asked by Večernji list, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure responded that the first phase of the Zagreb Railway Node Development Study is now nearing completion. This initial phase concerns the connection of Zagreb Airport with the railway network, Večernji list writes.
An optimal solution has been selected, for which all stakeholders have agreed, and the financial and economic analysis remains to be completed. It can now be stated that the completion of the first phase of the Zagreb Node Study is expected by the end of August 2025. This will be followed by contracting and preparing further project documentation, followed by contracting and the actual carrying out of these extensive works.
The train and accompanying railway line from the main station to Zagreb Airport would actually be built from the Odra railway station, passing by Velika Mlaka and parallel to the roads towards the old terminal to the new one. The new connection with the runway for the needs of the Croatian Air Force would follow a different and safer route than the current one.
During the construction of the new passenger terminal, road traffic was lowered through the underpass above which there is a connection between the Pleso Air Base and the runway itself. Over time, this proved to be a vulnerable point because the collapse of this underpass would cause issues for the Rafales in the hangars, writes Večernji.
