Got an Old TV? Prepare to Buy a New One! New Broadcasting System On the Way

Lauren Simmonds

In 2019, Croatia will switch to a new terrestrial TV broadcasting system.

As Index reports on the 25th of July, 2017, Croatia will switch to a brand new broadcasting system in 2019, and yes, unfortunately you’ll need to make some alterations one way or the other.

According to HAKOM (Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries), Croatia’s current DVB-T broadcasting standards will be replaced by DVB-T2, and its implementation will enable a more economical transmission of high definition TV content. Switching from DVB-T to DVB-T2 will also facilitate the development of new services. HAKOM has published a recommendation on the minimum technical requirements of the DVB-T2 digital terrestrial television receiver.

For those of us wondering what it means for us, in reality it means that we will need to obtain new reception equipment which has been adapted to the new standard, or, we will have to buy new TVs that support the DVB-T2 system and the H.265 / HEVC coding system.

Due to system adaptation, in the period from 2019 to 2021, those of us affected will need to acquire new reception equipment, adapted to the new standard (the so-called STB-Set Top Box devices). When selecting a new TV/receiver, it will be important that it supports the DVB-T2 system and the H.265/HEVC coding system, as well as comply with the future recommendation on the minimum technical requirements of the DVB-T2 receiver in the Republic of Croatia.

If residents of the Republic of Croatia are buying a new TV receiver in the meantime for any reason, which, in this case, is not necessary before the changing of the general standards in the period from 2019 to 2021, it is advisable to pay attention to the standards of the new TV in order to avoid additional costs in the future.
