March the 22nd, 2026 – The new Maksimir Stadium is set to boast a fan shop, a club museum and more as the tender for the future complex has been announced.
As Poslovni Dnevnik/Katarina Kusec writes, some of the plaster and walls are falling to bits, there is tape around the stands, the east of the stadium has been closed to spectators since the 2020 earthquake, this is the reality of Maksimir. Instead of football, the ramparts around Dinamo’s pitch have become the main topic across Europe.
a 35,000 sea capacity
“Football deserves for the stadiums where our biggest clubs and the Croatian national team play to be those that show the country has won world medals. This should especially be the case when other teams from the Champions League or other national teams come,” said Prime Minister Andrej Plenković a year ago, and Croatian football is now finally coming into its own.
The future Maksimir stadium is on the verge of a renaissance, because in a few years a brand new facility will be built to successfully meet all of the highest possible categories of UEFA and FIFA. The stadium will be enough to impress giants like Chelsea or Real Madrid. An international architectural and urban planning tender has finally been announced for it. A conceptual design is being sought for a new football stadium with a capacity of around 35,000 seats and for supporting facilities, including garages with 800 seats and three training fields, one of which has a 1,500-seat grandstand.
The total capacity includes VIP and VVIP categories, with a significant share of premium seats. The spectator area will span around 9,210 square metres of net area, including stands, communication rings and all supporting facilities.
the future maksimir stadium will have a fan shop and a club museum
Večernji list reports that the western stand will function as the primary catering and hospitality area with boxes, and is also designed as the operational centre of the stadium in which competition protocols, security systems and representative public facilities overlap. The future Maksimir Stadium will also have a fan shop and a club museum.
The northern stand will be intended for organised groups of home fans, while the southern one will be organised into two spectator rings. It should serve as a key zone for fan segregation and stadium administration. The eastern stand is currently being intended to be the club’s primary logistical and highly functional hub. Project solutions will be able to be submitted by June the 24th, and the works themselves should start in 2029, while the start of the removal of the old stadium is expected in 2027.
Back in February last year, the Croatian Government and the City of Zagreb signed an agreement to finance the construction of the future football stadium in Maksimir from the state and city budgets in a ratio of 50:50. The estimated value of the football stadium remained at 175 million euros excluding VAT, while with landscaping, supporting fields and a garage, it amounts to 205 million euros excluding VAT.
