Croatian emergency services back in action.
Police vessel Sveti Dujam and its crew have left Split on Friday to take part in the operation “Poseidon Sea 2015”, at the maritime border between Greece and Turkey, where they will provide support to the Greeks in the search and rescue of migrants and refugees in the area of the eastern Mediterranean, reports Vecernji List on August 28, 2015.
“There are 27 teams members in total, and 24 of them will participate in the operation as members of the crew. Poseidon Sea 2015 is an important operation because of the large influx of illegal migrants and we have been invited to participate. Our police officers already participate in the operation Triton. On board of the Croatian Navy Ship Andrija Mohorovičić there are 5 policemen. So far, they have participated in 7 individual missions and saved 1,380 people, including 440 children”, said police director Vlado Dominić at a ceremony in Split.
Operation “Poseidon Sea 2015” is organized by the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the EU (FRONTEX), due to the large influx of illegal migrants and refugees by sea. The goal is to protect the EU’s external borders. The crew is comprised of police officers from the Split-Dalmatia, Primorje-Gorski Kotar, Zadar and Šibenik-Knin Police Departments.
In addition to Croatia, the operation “Poseidon Sea 2015” includes other EU member states (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden and the United Kingdom), non-EU countries (Albania, Iceland and Ukraine), and a number of EU agencies and international organizations.
