If you’ve ever wanted to be an Ambassador, even if just for a day, now is your chance!

A new initiative that allows you to become an Ambassador for a day and stand up for gender equality was launched in Croatia by the British Embassy.

The initiative, in its entirety, hopes to promote the gender equality that the UK Government, and other countries involved through their ambassadors, promote and apply in practice.

The initiative is a competition for young people aged 16-18 – both male and female – who will have the chance to win a day with one of the ambassadors. The aim of the competition is to provide the winners with an insight into diplomacy and international politics and give them the opportunity to voice their opinions on pressing for progress on gender equality. These young women and men will thus be given a platform from which they can share their ideas for how a gender-equal future can be shaped.

British Ambassador to Croatia, Andrew Dalgleish, spoke on behalf of the initiative during its launch today.

“Together, we’ve had the idea that we would like to hear the views of young Croatians, young women, and young men – as we really want to engage young men – and invite them to send in a video about what they would do given the chance to be an Ambassador for a day to press for progress on gender equality.  I hope you can encourage all the young people you know to send in entries. The best videos will be invited to come along and to spend the day with an Ambassador, with each of us here, discovering what its like to be an Ambassador and to finish the day with a roundtable or conference where we engage directly with the issue of gender equality and where our young Ambassador for the day will take the front seat to lead the discussion.”

This competition is organized under the patronage of Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, the President of the Republic of Croatia, the British Embassy and other participating Embassies.

To enter the competition, a competitor will need to make a video (maximum one minute in length) explaining in English what he or she would do if they were an Ambassador for a day to press for progress on gender equality. The competition allows maximum one video entry per individual.

The applicants will then be judged by an independent panel, and 13 finalists (because 13 embassies are participating) will get a chance to shadow an Ambassador for a day. The finalists will later also join in a roundtable on gender equality in April or May this year.
