ZAGREB, May 22, 2018 – The Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Ministry said on Tuesday that Croatian sailor Ivan Furčić returned to Croatia from Libya on Tuesday morning following its intensive diplomatic and consular activities and efforts.
The sailor from Split worked on the Maltese ship Sovereign M, which was stopped without any cargo off the coast of Libya in the summer of 2015 by local tribal militias. Its crew members were arrested and taken to prison with the explanation that they intended to smuggle oil products.
The Croatian ministry said Furčić’s return was a result of its continuous efforts and diplomatic and consular activities and intensive cooperation with the relevant Libyan authorities.
