Ex-Serb Paramilitary Arrested for War Crimes in Croatia

ZAGREB, May 8, 2018 – Stevan Budač, accused of war crimes committed in Croatia in the 1990s, was arrested on a European Arrest Warrant in Romania on May 5, Osijek County Court, which issued the warrant, said on Tuesday.

Budač was indicted by the Osijek County Prosecutor’s Office on 18 December 1996. On 21 March 2002, after being tried in absentia, he was found guilty of war crimes against civilians in the Baranja region and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment pending appeal.

After the attorneys representing Budač and the others defendants in the case appealed, Croatia’s Supreme Court quashed the verdict on 19 January 2006 and ordered a retrial.

The 51-year-old Budač is accused of participating in the abuse, expulsion and intimidation of Croats and Hungarians in the village of Batina from the summer of 1991 to the autumn of 1995. At the time, he was a Serb paramilitary.
