ZAGREB, May 17, 2018 – On the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), observed May 17, fourteen embassies in Croatia on Wednesday called for supporting the struggle for all people to enjoy equal rights regardless of their identity, the Canadian Embassy said in a press release.

IDAHOT is aimed at raising awareness of LGBTI rights and violations and in stimulating interest in LGBT rights work worldwide.

This year’s global theme is “Alliance for Solidarity,” focusing on the need for solidarity within the communities of various minorities, as the rights of one group cannot be ensured if the rights of other groups are neglected.

As Canada and Chile co-chair the Equal Rights Coalition, their embassies called on the diplomatic community in Croatia to celebrate that day, with 12 embassies accepting the invitation.

The embassies of Albania, Australia, Chile, Finland, France, Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, USA, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom have joined forces with Rainbow Families, a Croatian NGO providing support for LGBTI couples and individuals, in celebrating IDAHOT.

Equal human rights, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, are IDAHOT’s main objective and we recognise that Croatia too is a partner country in advancing LGBTI rights, the Canadian embassy said.
