HDZ Meets to Decide on Coalition Partners

It is expected that many of the current HDZ partners will not be invited to join the party for the elections in September.

Highest bodies of HDZ will meet today to decide how and with whom the party will cooperate for the upcoming parliamentary elections. HDZ president Andrej Plenković said before the meeting of the party presidency that they wanted to enter into partnerships in constituencies where their partners can give a contribution to good election results, reports Index.hr on July 25, 2016.

“Our idea is as follows –we want HDZ to go to the polls on the national level and we are also working on partnerships in regions where our partners can give a contribution. Today we will discuss this idea”, said Plenković to reporters before the meeting of the party presidency on Monday morning. Later in the day, the party National Council and Main Committee will also meet to discuss the electoral strategy.

In connection with the statements made by HSP-AS secretary general Pero Ćorić about cooperation with HDZ, Plenković said that there was no ultimatum, but that they only discussed certain issues.

The nominee for HDZ political secretary Ivo Davor Stier, who will today probably be confirmed as such by the party Main Committee, said that he respected members and voters of HSP-AS, pointing out that the HDZ would not engage in political horse-trading.

“Ćorić is unhappy and dissatisfied, because he sees that his blackmails will not bring anything positive to him. He realized that he made a big mistake when he thought that he could enter into horse-trading with us like HSS’s Stipe Gabrić did with Zoran Milanović and SDP. However, Andrej Plenković is different from Milanović and he does not take part in horse-trading”, said Stier.

HDZ deputy president Milijan Brkić said that “there could be no ultimatums between partners”.

Ćorić said over the weekend that, if HDZ were to decline to form a coalition with them, HSP-AS would terminate all coalition agreements with HDZ at a local level.
