People Trafficker Tries to Escape Police, Crashes on Motorway with Migrants

Total Croatia News

A dozen migrants ended up in hospitals.

At around 20:00 on Monday evening, the police station in Slavonski Brod received a report that on the A3 motorway at Slobodnica, a driver of a foreign vehicle refused to obey the orders of the traffic police to stop and continued driving, attempting to push the police car from the road. He lost control of his own vehicle, crashing into the wire fence next to the motorway and ending up in a drainage channel, reports sbplus.hr on October 17, 2017.

A substantial number of people were present in his vehicle, of which several were injured and transported to hospitals in Slavonski Brod and Nova Gradiška. Fortunately, most of them were not seriously hurt. Given that these are all foreign nationals, the police officers are currently trying to determine the circumstances of how they entered Croatia.

The police are also working on working on other circumstances surrounding this criminal act, and will accordingly determine the appropriate way to deal with it, said the spokeswoman for the Brod-Posavina Police Department, Kata Nujić.

According to the media, ten injured people were transported to the hospital in Slavonski Brod, and two in Nova Gradiška. They are all foreign nationals, most likely Afghans.

Of the ten received in Slavonski Brod, two came with head and chest injuries, while the other eight were just being monitored, as it was still uncertain whether any of them had more severe injuries.

The problem the medical staff are facing is the fact that none of the injured people want to communicate about the situation to them. Of the two patients brought to the hospital in Nova Gradiška, one is in a life-threatening condition. All the patients were in shock and were cold, though they had warm clothes on them. They are all men, aged between 20 and 40.

Since all the people involved were wearing muddy shoes, it is assumed that those in question are migrants who illegally crossed the Croatian border on foot and then used the vehicle whose driver did not want to stop at the police’s request. All of those who were transported to the hospitals are still under the police supervision because the investigation against them and the driver is continuing.
