She is not out choice, but she does have the technical support of the government, says Karamarko.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, HDZ president and First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko said that Vesna Pusić as a candidate for Secretary General of the United Nations was not their choice and that he personally would never had voted for her, but that she would have the technical support of the government, explaining that Croatia needs to behave in a civilized way, reports Jutarnji List on April 17, 2016.

Stressing once again that Pusić was not their choice, Karamarko said that she was a bad candidate nominated by the previous bad government. “Vesna Pusić was the choice of the previous government. A minimum of civilized behaviour in this situation is that we will not prevent her nor will we close the doors of Croatian diplomatic posts abroad to her”, said Karamarko asked by reporters whether Pusić had the support of the government.

He added that Pusić will probably have technical support of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. “Pusić is definitely not our choice and I would have never voted for her”, said Karamarko. He added that he had not heard that there were members of Parliament who were collecting signatures against her candidacy.

Vesna Pusić, a candidate for the UN Secretary General, said in Zagreb on Saturday that she saw no divisions at the top of the government with regards to the support for her candidacy and added that people should be smart and not embarrass the country in a process that is ongoing.

Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković said on Wednesday that Vesna Pusić enjoyed the support of the government as a candidate and that she would not be obstructed. However, HSP AS, a party which is a member of the ruling coalition, on Friday started collecting signatures in the Parliament against her candidacy and announced that permanent members of the UN Security Council would receive a letter explaining why Pusić does not deserve to become the Secretary General of the UN.

On Wednesday, Pusić spent two hours in New York answering questions from members of the United Nations, as part of the selection process for the successor of current Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, whose term of office expires at the end of 2016. Former Croatian Foreign Minister is one of eight candidates for Ban’s successor.
