First Deputy Prime Minister to leave the government.

According to media reports, HDZ president Tomislav Karamarko will resign on Wednesday from the post of First Deputy Prime Minister. Karamarko will announce his decision on the day when the Commission for Conflict of Interest Prevention will make a decision in his case, reports Index.hr on June 14, 2016.

Karamarko reportedly said that his resignation was a part of a strategy of the Patriotic Coalition. According to one of the participants of the today’s meeting of the Patriotic Coalition leaders, Karamarko also said that he did not want to be a burden for the future Croatian government. He will resign regardless of whether the decision of the Commission for Conflict of Interest Prevention turns out to be positive for him or not. HDZ hopes that the resignation could help them form a new ruling majority in Parliament.

Given that Karamarko has apparently accepted MOST’s condition for their cooperation with the Patriotic Coalition to continue, it seemed that Karamarko’s resignation could ensure the survival of the government in its current composition.

However, MOST is also demanding that HDZ withdraws its motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković, and there are no indications at this moment that HDZ will do that.
