ZAGREB, August 14, 2018 – Police on Monday arrested two men suspected of smuggling migrants in a station wagon with German licence plates after they tried to run over a policeman who then shot at the car in an attempt to stop them.
Police found 29 migrants standing by a road in Živković Kosa near Vojnić. Karlovac police commissioner Darko Bratić said the officer was justified in using a firearm and shooting at the rear tires of the station wagon after the driver would not stop, accelerating instead towards the officer in an attempt to run him over.
The car went on towards Karlovac and stopped outside the town, with the two persons inside running away. Police soon found the car and the two persons nearby, arresting them.
Bratić said the nationalities of the migrants were not known yet and that he was pleased no one was injured in this case.
He said the two migrants killed in a rock-slide on Sunday were Algerians and described their death was an accident.
