Minister Not Worried About Croatia’s Poor Judicial Independence Ranking

ZAGREB, October 21, 2018 – Justice Minister Dražen Bošnjaković commented on Saturday on a recent World Economic Forum report which ranked Croatia 120th out of 140 countries in terms of judicial independence, saying such a bad ranking was unrealistic.

“I have to admit the parameters which led to that aren’t clear to me because during the EU membership negotiations we even changed the constitution so that all these processes could be transparent and independent,” he told reporters in Ivanić Grad.

He also said that by proposing an increase in judges’ base pay by 6% as of January 1, given that the base pay in the public sector had gone up, the Justice Ministry was trying to give judges back what was taken from them during the economic stagnation.

Judges’ base pay was cut by 3% in 2013 and by another 6% in 2014.
