MOST Breaks With HDZ, Votes for SDP’s Ostojić

Former Interior Minister Ranko Ostojić (SDP) was elected on Friday as the new Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Interior Affairs and National Security. Ostojić received votes of 81 MPs from opposition parties and MOST, while representatives of the Patriotic Coalition voted against. Although earlier the Patriotic Coalition sent a message that Ostojić was not acceptable because of the way he communicates, today there was no debate about his nomination, reports Index.hr on February 12, 2016.

The opposition insisted in recent days that Ostojić was the right choice for this position because he was a professional, and that it was a legal and traditional right of the largest opposition party to decide for itself who will chair the Committee on Interior Affairs and National Security.

After the vote, MOST’ MP Maro Kristić said that he supported Ostojić only because the position belongs to the opposition. “Ranko Ostojić is a good example of what Zoran Milanović has turned SDP into, a horde of agitators who know only how to sow hatred and divisions. We regret that SDP insisted on Ostojić and we have supported him solely because this post belongs to the opposition, although a person who expresses himself in such a way does not deserve to chair this Committee. His rhetoric is not appropriate for a Member of Parliament and Chairman of such an important committee. We all remember his inappropriate statements and insults. Unfortunately, that man is a problem of SDP and their shame”, Kristić said.

Ines Strenja Linić, another MP from MOST, also said that MOST was just respecting the law and added that SDP should have proposed a more suitable candidate because there are other members of SDP who could have been proposed.

Miro Bulj was the only MP from MOST who voted against Ostojić. He pointed out that other people in MOST have a very low opinion about Ostojić, but have decided to respect the democratic process. “I have voted against Ostojić according to my conscience and because of the swastika and all kinds of statements which are unacceptable”, said Bulj.

After he was elected, Ostojić thanked everyone who voted for him, including MOST which supported his candidacy even though it is a part of the ruling coalition which voted against him. “It is important for me to send a message to all those who did not vote for me, and that is that I will continue to work seriously. Thanks to everyone who decided to respect the law. The first session of the Committee will start in a few minutes”, said Ostojić and added he did not feel euphoric. He concluded that the lawmakers who have not voted for him “were not fully informed”.
