MPs Reportedly Collect Enough Signatures for Dissolution of Parliament

Early elections will probably take place in early September.

On Friday morning, Parliament Speaker Željko Reiner accepted the request of SDP and HNS and suspended the session of Parliament. Since reportedly there are more than 80 signatures for the dissolution of Parliament, representatives of the opposition parties requested that the Speaker include the dissolution of Parliament in the agenda later today, reports Večernji List on June 17, 2016.

“We cannot pretend that nothing is happening. The majority of MPs have submitted a request for the dissolution of Parliament, and it is clear that this means that the work of this Parliament has come to the end. Citizens demand new elections, and therefore we demand that you stop this session and include the dissolution to the agenda”, said Peđa Grbin (SDP).

“There are over 80 signatures for the dissolution of Parliament. There is no reason for this to continue, I hope there will be a constructive agreement between parties”, said Ivan Vrdoljak (HNS).

Reiner accepted the proposal of HNS and SDP to suspend the session. “We will continue, but I cannot tell you when”, said Reiner.

The initiative for the dissolution of Parliament has received support of MOST and of minority MPs. After the Parliament is dissolved, new elections have to take place within between 30 and 60 days.

This morning, HDZ still claimed that it was possible for their candidate for Prime Minister-designate, current Finance Minister Zdravko Marić, to collect 76 MPs to form a new government. Ivan Šuker, chairman of the HDZ Parliamentary Group, did not want to comment on the possibility of the dissolution of Parliament. “If they have enough signatures, we know the procedure. They should hand them over to the Speaker”, said Šuker.

He added that he did not know what HDZ delegation would say later today to President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović who is conducting consultations with party representatives.
