ZAGREB, March 30, 2018 – After media on Thursday published photos of desecrated notices of death of Croatian citizens of Islamic faith, minority MP Ermina Lekaj Prljaskaj issued a statement calling on police to urgently investigate the incident and punish the perpetrator.
Lekaj Prljaskaj represents the Albanian, Bosniak, Montenegrin, Macedonian and Slovenian minority communities in the parliament.
In Croatia, apart from being published in newspapers, death notices can also be seen on public notice boards or lamp posts.
Photographs of two notices of death of people of Islamic faith, found smeared with lard in the Zagreb neighbourhood of Borongaj, appeared on Twitter on Thursday.
Lekaj Prljaskaj recalled that in many Muslim countries around the world Croatia was recognised as a country whose Muslim minority was socially integrated in the best possible way, adding that “this horrible sacrilege” filled the Islamic community “with utter disbelief and disappointment.”
