The latest from the migrant crisis in Croatia.

From midnight to 9 pm on Monday, 4,174 migrants entered Croatia. There were 978 persons accommodated at the temporary refugee reception centre in Slavonski Brod. Since the beginning of the migration crisis, 504,062 migrants and refugees have passed through Croatia. It is expected that the influx of refugees from Serbia into Croatia will continue, reports Index.hr, Tportal and Vecernji List on December 15, 2015.

Croatian Member of European Parliament Ivan Jakovčić sent a letter to Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar expressing his outrage and strongly condemning the construction of razor wire fence on the border between Slovenian and Croatian part of Istria. Jakovčić stated that Cerar’s decision was unprecedented in the long history of Istria and that it was an absurd and sad attempt to solve the migrant crisis.

“I can understand your concerns about the unwillingness of the EU and member states to resolve the migrant crisis, but I cannot understand your obvious lack of knowledge about relations between the citizens of Istria. I urge you to immediately revise your policies, especially in Istria, so that we can continue to have confidence in you and develop relations of friendship and good-neighbourliness”, Jakovčić wrote. “I would like to inform you that I will speak about this issues in the European institutions and take advantage of all opportunities to make the European public aware of your unacceptable acts”, Jakovčić concluded.

President of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Assembly Erik Fabijanić criticized Slovenian decision to construct a wire fence on the border with Croatia, comparing it with Nazi concentration camps. “Barbed wire can remind us of concentration camps. During the accession negotiations with the European Union, we have talked about human rights. The question is where is now that system of values, where are these standards of human rights that we have discussed.” He noted that citizens of Slovenia are also against the barbed wire.

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said she wanted to ”drastically reduce” the number of refugees who are coming to Germany, signalling a compromise with the critics of the open door policy within her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. Merkel did not yield to the pressure of some CDU members to define an upper limit for the number of refugees which would be admitted to Germany, but she has accepted the ”people’s concern about the future”. “This means that we want to drastically reduce the number of people who are coming here”, said the German Chancellor. Her speech was met with a loud applause, which is especially important in these moments when her policy towards refugees is under criticism from both the opposition and her own party.
