“I was summoned to an interview at 11 a.m. Wednesday and I will act accordingly,” Šimunić told Hina.

Šimunić told the media on Monday that he had attended a meeting with Tušek and the HDZ mayor of Oroslavje, Emil Gredičak, accusing them of offering him help in the financing of his election campaign if he ran in local elections in May as an independent candidate as well as possible employment in certain posts after the elections.

“I did this in public interest, for this bad, corrupt system to start changing so that one day our children could live better,” Šimunić said.

He repeated that the meeting in Gredičak’s cottage was organised by Gredičak.

“He contacted me first. That is beyond dispute. I didn’t know what would happen at the meeting,” said Šimunić.

He said that due to large media interest and numerous calls, he did not have time to read the whole of Tušek’s statement on the controversial event but that he did manage to read some parts.

“The man said that I was a liar and that he was an honest and moral person, that says all about him. I think that the recording shows what Mr Tušek is like,” said Šimunić.

He said he expected the HDZ leadership to respond to the case, adding that the party’s response “will determine how the case will unfold.”
