Slovenia to Introduce Stricter Controls on Croatia Border; Montenegro Prepares for Migrant Route Change

The latest from the migrant crisis.

Due to the new attitude of some countries towards migrants and refugees, in the coming weeks Slovenia will introduce stricter controls on the Croatian border, announced Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar on Friday. “Slovenia is obliged to protect the Schengen border and to effectively control it. Therefore, we will have to further strengthen the control of the border with Croatia in the coming weeks”, said Cerar, reports Index.hr on February 12, 2016.

Slovenian Prime Minister added that it was obvious that the capacities for accommodating refugees in the countries of Central Europe such as Austria and Germany have been “significantly reduced”, which affects their measures to deal with the migration crisis. According to statements by Austrian officials, Austria will in a few days introduce a new entry regime for migrants coming from Slovenia, with the possibility of introducing a daily quota of up to 2,500 refugees who will be allowed to enter Austria only at the Spielfeld/Šentilj border crossing.

Cerar said that Slovenia will react to these measures promptly and adequately because it cannot allow for a large number of refugees to remain in Slovenia for a long time. Speaking about the upcoming EU summit, Cerar said that he would continue to personally advocate a common European solution, and that he has already put forward his proposal to help Macedonia with police forces and equipment.

In other migrant related news, Montenegrin government has ordered authorities to prepare plans in the event that the country becomes a part of the transit route for migrants, which was recently mentioned as a possibility by Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz. “It was agreed that the relevant authorities will prepare their proposals and that we will receive their specific conclusions at the next meeting of the government”, said Montenegrin Finance Minister Radivoje Žugić.

Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said that he does not exclude the possibility for Montenegro to become a part of the transit route for migrants if his country closes its borders, saying that such decision would have consequences for the whole region. Montenegrin Foreign Minister Igor Lukšić said that Montenegro will harmonize its policies with other countries in the region and in the European Union.

In Croatia, the so-called southern migrant route has been repeatedly mentioned as a possibility last year when, in the midst of the election campaign, HDZ accused the government of building a refugee reception centre at the Prevlaka peninsula near the border with Montenegro. Earlier this month, new Croatian Foreign Minister Miro Kovač denied there was a refugee wave coming to Croatia through Montenegro, adding that “Croatia will be ready” if that occurs.
