Split Fire Caused 220 Million Kuna in Damages

The recent fire destroyed thousands of hectares of forests and agricultural land, about 20 cars and 15 houses.

Mayor of Split Andro Krstulović Opara announced on Tuesday, during a special session of the Town Council devoted to the recent fire in the Split area, that the first estimates indicate that the damages caused by the fire amounted to about 220 million kunas, reports Jutarnji List on 1 August 2017.

“According to the first estimates, about 200 million kunas in damages was caused in the forest areas, while approximately 20 million kunas was caused on predominantly agricultural assets,” said Krstulović Opara.

He reported that 829 individual damage reports had been filed so far, 80 percent of which involve forests and agricultural land in private ownership, while 20 percent are for real estate and movable property, houses and cars.

The Mayor of Split emphasised that the priority of firefighting efforts was to protect people and houses.

“The fire spread rapidly due to neglected plots of land, and in the future, we will have to put greater emphasis on the need to change our attitude towards the environment. Natural disasters such as this cannot be foreseen, but we have to be better prepared for them so that there would not be chaos,” said Krstulović Opara. He added that about 4,500 hectares were burned.

He announced that he would “reformulate priorities” in the town budget for 2017 in order to allocate more money for firefighters.

Deputy Mayor and Chief of the Civilian Protection Command Nino Vela pointed out that about 20 cars and 15 houses were burned in the fire, and more than a thousand homes were in an immediate danger of being destroyed.

The fire in the Split area started on 17 July this year, about 40 minutes after midnight. It was finally officially extinguished on 25 July, about 24 hours after the last smoke was seen, according to a written report submitted to the special session of the Split Town Council.
