ZAGREB, September 27, 2018 – Commenting on the “fabricated text messages” affair, the head of the parliamentary home affairs and national security committee Ranko Ostojić of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) warned on Wednesday that “information involving the investigation is leaking” and that there was a possibility that some powerful people were using their position of privilege and privileged information for showdowns within their party, which was very dangerous for national security.

“The committee wants to know how is it possible for something like this to happen and who is responsible for the information leak, notably in light of the fact that this is not the first time something like that has happened. As a consequence, very important investigations into very powerful people, who clearly have friends in high places, come to nothing, ” Ostojić told the press.

It is very important to establish who can influence investigations, Ostojić said.

Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković said on Wednesday he could not comment on the investigation in the text messages scandal as the relevant authorities were dealing with it and that one could only wait for the final result.

He was responding to the question by reporters in Dubovac if knew whether the investigation was going in the direction of Deputy Speaker Milijan Brkić.

Asked if he knew Franjo Varga, a former Interior Ministry IT expert suspected of making up false text messages, and if it was true that Varga, when he was arrested, asked to speak with him, Jandroković said he read that in the media and that he did not know if it was true.

Jandroković said he did not know Varga, that he had never communicated with him and that he had no idea why Varga would have allegedly said that.

Also on Wednesday, speaking in an interview from New York, where she was attending the annual UN General Assembly meeting, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović said she was following developments surrounding this affair as much as she could considering her schedule and that she would discuss it with relevant services after she returned to Croatia.
