Thieves Steal Money and Gold from Police Headquarters in Zagreb

Another hard to believe story coming from Croatia.

Unknown perpetrators broke last night in the police headquarters in Zagreb, report Index.hr and tportal.hr on April 4, 2016.

According to unofficial information, the rooms used by the organized crime unit were broken into and the robbers stole a substantial amount of gold and money – 280,000 euros and two kilograms of gold. The police briefly announced that the criminal investigation was in progress and that the investigation was being led by the State Attorney’s Office.

The National Police Union has asked for the dismissal of the Police Director General and the Chief of the Zagreb Police Department.

According to reports, employees in the morning found an upturned safe in the room. The perpetrators entered the second floor of the building via an external fire escape. It is still unknown whether any confidential documents were taken.

Željko Cvrtila, former Chief of the Criminal Police, said he was not surprised by this event. He said that the building had an unsatisfactory security system. During the night, guards are stationed at the entrance of the building. The question is whether they just stay there or whether they patrol the building and its surroundings. “The money and the gold in the safe were either evidence or were needed for some operation”, said Cvrtila.

“Someone on the inside probably knew about it. It is certain that no one would try to break into the police building without knowing exactly what was being kept in the safe”, concluded Cvrtila.
