Saint Leopold Mandić, Adriatic Derby, and Cruise Ships: People of Split, Beware!

Here’s a friendly heads up: Split will be a madhouse today!

Remember the photos we shared of a packed Split city center yesterday?

To put things into perspective, three cruisers were responsible for yesterday’s madness. Among them was the “Aidabella” cruiser which sails under an Italian flag and is 252 meters long, and the “Norwegian Spirit” and “Norwegian Star” cruise ships, both 300 meters long, also paid Split a visit, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on September 16, 2017.

It was clear that the center of the city is still full of tourists, occupied both by those staying in hotels and apartments, and those who are on one-day excursions off their cruise ships.

In total, according to data by the Port Authority of Split, from January 1, 2017, to Sunday, September 17, 2017, 161 cruisers will have visited Split – and by the end of the year, there will be 237 total.

But now, on to the juicy bits about today in Split. Brace yourselves.

Today, Split expects two more cruise ships including “Queen Elizabeth”, which is 293 meters long, and the ”MSC Sinfonia” which is 10 meters shorter. Both ships are destined to bring thousands of passengers to our city – and, with thousands of believers pilgrimaging to the Church of Our Lady of Pojišan for the relics of Saint Leopold Mandić, the Adriatic Derby going on at Poljud, the 26th year anniversary of the Croatian Navy, and a bike tour celebrating European Mobility Week, we can confidently say that the city of Split will be loaded today.

What to expect:

Citizens and tourists should beware of the Split Bicycle Tour which will take place at 16:30 from the West Coast, across the Riva, to Bačvice and Zenta where entertainment awaits the cyclists at Club Zenta.

In celebration of the 26th anniversary of the Croatian Navy, ships will sail to the West Coast, and there will be a concert on the Riva this evening. You can find the full program here

As if that is not enough, Hajduk will welcome Rijeka today at Poljud for the highly anticipated Adriatic Derby. The match begins at 17:00 and the police have informed citizens and traffic participants that, from 14:00 until the end of the game, there will be a complete blockade of motor vehicle traffic on the walkway around the stadium. There will also be a complete blockade on Ul. 8 Mediteranskih Igara 2 at the intersection with Sedam Kaštela, Ul. 8 Mediteranskih Igara 2 at the pool, Ul. 8 Mediteranskih Igara 2 at “Hemingway”, at Zrinsko Frankopanska from the intersection with Ul. HRM to the entrance to Lora, and Put Supavla to the intersection of Put Brodarice.

Last but not least, the people of Split have the chance to visit the relics of Saint Leopold Mandić this afternoon from 16.00 hrs until Monday at 10:30 at Church of Our Lady of Pojišan. Due to the pilgrimage, Pojišanska ul. will be blocked from the intersection with Bačvice Promenade to Osječka ul. If necessary, blockages will be established from the intersection of Ul. kralja Zvonimira and Osječka to the crossroads of Ul. kralja Zvonimira and Ulica Slobode. While the cleric’s body is in the church, Viška Street will be closed from the intersection with Ul. kralja Zvonimira to the intersection with Gupca, and it will not be possible to drive on any part of Gupca from Gospinica to the intersection with Viška. Ul. kralja Zvonimira to the center of the city will be used only for buses of public transport and buses used for the pilgrimage.
