The 42nd Faros Marathon has come to an end.
On Saturday, August 26, 2017, the 42nd Faros Marathon was held in Stari Grad on the island of Hvar, under the auspices of President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on August 26, 2017.
This year’s Croatian International Long Distance Swimming Championship was attended by 31 participants – 20 male and 11 female swimmers from 13 countries. The Supreme Judge of the competition was Milivoj Mirosavac.
The marathon, which began at 8 am sharp, took swimmers on a 16-kilometer trek from the new Riva in Stari Grad to cape Kabal and back. The course, of course, always proves to be a struggle.

In the men’s competition, Italy’s Matteo Furlan (3:12:35) crossed the finish first, announcing his fourth consecutive victory. The Italian has also retained excellent form after recently winning 2nd place at the World Championships in Budapest (25km). Second place was won by the Argentinian marathon swimmer Guillermo Bertola (3:12:37), while third place was awarded to Dutchman Lars Bottelier (3:12:47).

The women’s competition this year was won by Angela Maurer from Germany (3:13:04), defending her title from last year and further proving that she is rightly ranked among the three best marathon swimmers of all time. Second place was won by the always unpredictable American Christine Jennings (3:15:06) who is also the current record holder of the 2013 course (3:04:09), while third place was awarded to Russian Aygul Sagirova (3:22:06).
