Will he finally beat Djokovic after 13 losses?
Croatia’s highest ranked tennis player and defending US Open champion Marin Cilic faces will have to be on top of his game tonight if he intends to extend his incredible winning streak in New York. He is facing world’s No. 1 player Novak Djokovic, and if we look at their previous track record where Djokovic owns a perfect 13- 0 record against Cilic, then we really will have to keep our fingers crossed and hope Marin’s serve will be perfect. If there’s a place where he can finally beat Djokovic, it’s US Open, his favourite tournament.
“This is, without a doubt, the hardest match and toughest opponent. I was so close to defeating him few times, but I was never able to find the right formula. We will see what will happen tonight. If you look at the statistics and how many times he won, it really doesn’t look good, but this is US Open and every match is a new story. I feel good and this tournament is where I play my very best tennis” – Cilic commented
“I know Marin very well, I have played against him many times but we are also very good friends. I know Marin will play aggressively, I watched his games during last US Open and that’s how he took the title. I will try and stick to my game plan and obviously play my best” – stated Djokovic.
In the meantime, we still don’t have official confirmation whether the match will be shown on Croatian National Television. Just like last year when they were able to secure the TV rights for the finals just hours before the match, HRT is still negotiating, given that the price of TV rights is too high. Match starts at 23:00 h, and if you have Eurosport, you’ll be able to follow the action live from New York.
