Conference League Qualifiers: Rijeka Moves to Playoff Round, Hajduk and Osijek Knocked Out

August 17, 2023 – The second leg of the Conference League qualifiers was played on Thursday. Hajduk and Osijek were left without the chance to play in Europe this season, while Rijeka advances to the playoff round.

Three Croatian clubs played the second leg of the Conference League 3rd qualifying round on Thursday. Hajduk was first up against PAOK in Thessaloniki, followed by Rijeka against B36 Torshavn at Rujevica and Osijek against Adana Demirspor at the new Opus Arena.

PAOK v. Hajduk (3-0)

All the euphoria surrounding the Split club lately was not enough to take Hajduk to the playoff round. After playing 0-0 in Split, Hajduk lost 3-0 to PAOK in Thessaloniki in the second leg of the Conference League 3rd round qualifiers. Schwab scored the first goal for PAOK in the 12th minute from the penalty spot, and the second and third were scored by Živković in the 79th and 84th minutes. Hajduk was thus left without a spot in the Conference League playoffs.

Osijek v. Adana Demirspor (3-2)

Osijek beat Adana Demirspor 3-2 in the return match of the 3rd qualifying round but was eliminated from Europe due to the 5-1 defeat in the first match in Turkey. Adana took the lead in the 31st minute with a goal by Sari, but Osijek equalized in the 43rd thanks to Nejašmić and took the lead in the 59th with a goal by Caktaš. In the 82nd minute, Gržan scored from the penalty spot for 3-1 and brought a glimmer of hope to Osijek, but Erdogan reduced the score to 3-2 in stoppage time.

Rijeka v. B36 Torshavn (2-0)

Rijeka beat B36 Torshavn 2-0 at Rujevica in the second leg of the 3rd qualifying round and advanced to the play-off round. An own goal in the 14th minute and a goal by Grgić in the 82nd secured Rijeka’s victory. Recall, Rijeka won 3-1 in the first leg on the Faroe Islands. In order to make the Conference League group stage, Rijeka will have to knock out the powerful Lille in the playoffs.
