Cowboys Coming Back: Croatia Handball Returns for Euro 2020 Qualifiers

Daniela Rogulj

The Croatia men’s handball team awaits a new round of qualifications, but this time for Euro 2020.

After successfully completing the qualifications for the World Championships, which saw Croatia play two matches against Montenegro, the Croatia men’s handball team is up for a new challenge – qualifications for the European Championships, which will be played from January 9 to 26, 2020, reports Gol.hr on October 10, 2018.

It will be the first major handball event to be organized by the three countries, as games will be played in Austria, Norway and Sweden. At the same time, it will be the first European Championship with 24 national teams instead of 16.

Four participants in the Euro 2020 are already known – and they are the tournament hosts plus Spain, who automatically qualifies after becoming the European Champion in Zagreb back in January this year.

Everyone else, including the Croatian Cowboys, will play a round of qualifications against the teams they drew this spring in Trondheim. A total of 32 teams have thus been deployed into eight groups of four. The top two teams from each group will play in the European Championships, as well as the four best third-placed teams.

Croatia is placed in ‘Group Two’, along with Serbia, Switzerland, and Belgium. The teams in each group will play two rounds, each with a home and away game, and after six rounds have been played, we will find out who will secure a spot in the 2020 Euros.

The great favorites for getting out of the group stage are Croatia and Serbia, but it is also important to note who will be first in the group, and who will place second. Indeed, every point and every victory is crucial and will have significant weight when determining groups for the European Championship itself.

Lino Červar will lead Croatia in the qualifiers on October 25th with a duel against Switzerland in Osijek. The national team will gather on October 22nd at noon in Zagreb, after which they will make the journey to Osijek.

Tickets for the Osijek spectacle are on sale through ulaznice.hr and at INA gas stations Svačićeva and Trpimirova East in Osijek for 70 and 100kn.
