The current world champions have played excellent water polo in the first round of the tournament.
The Croatia men’s water polo team won first place in Group C and direct placement into the quarterfinals of the European Championships in Barcelona, thanks to a victory over Greece 11: 7 (2 0, 5:4, 3:1, 1:2), reports Gol.hr on July 21, 2018.
Javier Garcia scored four goals for Croatia, three were added by Ante Vukičević, and one each by Luka Lončar, Marko Macan, Maro Joković and Anđelo Šetka. Constantinos Genidounias, Georgios Dervisys, and Alexandros Gounas each scored two goals for Greece, while Marios Kapotsis scored one.
In the first test of the Euros, Croatia, the current world champions, have exhibited excellent water polo. Flawless defense in the first quarter left the Greeks without a shot, while Javier Garcia and Luka Lončar managed to score for Croatia. The second quarter saw the attacks of both teams wake up, especially in situations when they had a player more, but Croatia managed to keep their momentum and even increase their advantage.
The last time the Greeks threatened was when they diminished Croatia’s lead to 8:5 at the start of the third quarter, but by the end of the quarter, Marko Macan and Garcia were the only shooters, increasing Croatia’s advantage to 10:5. Garcia’s goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter increased their lead to 11:5.
With this victory, Croatia also secured three free days, as the next match will be on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
