According to Croatian media reports, Luka Modrić has invited Darijo Srna back to the national team.
The Croatia national team begins their qualifiers for Euro 2020 in the second half of March. Croatia is in Group E, and the first game is played at Maksimir stadium, on March 21, against Azerbaijan. Three days later, Croatia will visit Hungary, where all 1,300 tickets for Croatian fans have already sold, reports Gol.hr on February 27, 2019.
It has been known for some time that Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić could have a problem in the defense, especially with the left and right backs. As things stand now, the greatest enigma is who will play in the right-back position, which has been reserved for Šime Vrsaljko over the last three years.
Šime underwent surgery earlier this month and will not see the pitch again until the end of the year – and, unfortunately, Croatia does not have an heir. Tin Jedvaj and Karlo Bartolec are potential substitutes, but Jedvaj could play against Azerbaijan in the heart of the defense with Domagoj Vida, as Dejan Lovren serves his one game suspension.
According to Sportski Novosti, Captain Luka Modrić has contacted his predecessor, Darijo Srna, who currently plays at Italian club Cagliari. Srna will be 37 years old in two months, but Modrić believes that the former captain would greatly assist the Croatia national team in the upcoming qualifying matches.
Sportski Novosti also wrote that Srna was supposedly interested in returning, though Dalić has not yet spoken to Modrić or Srna about the potential return. We won’t wait long for the news, however, as Dalić will have to publish his list of players soon.
Croatia will open their qualifiers on March 21 at a home match against Azerbaijan at Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb (20:45). Three days later, on March 24, the Croatia national team will play at Groupama Arena in Budapest against the national team of Hungary (18:00).
