Donna Vekić Plays in Washington Open Final, Achieves Career Ranking

The 22-year-old Osijek tennis player shined in the US capital this week and made the best jump yet in the WTA rankings.

Donna Vekić, who played in the final of the Washington Open in tennis on Sunday, achieved her best career ranking this week. Vekić has thus jumped seven places and on Monday is the 37th best tennis player in the world, reports Gol.hr on August 6, 2018.

Russian tennis player Svetlana Kuznec won the WTA tournament in Washington after defeating Vekić 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 in the final on Sunday. Vekić failed to use four match points in the second set, one in her service for the tie-break, and the third set went convincingly to the Russian player who quickly went to 5:0 to secure the match.

This was the fourth defeat for Vekić in the final of a WTA tournament, leaving her with the same two winning titles – Kuala Lumpur in 2014 and Nottingham in 2017.

In other Croatian female tennis player news, Petra Martić fell one place and is now the 51st best tennis player in the world, while Jana Fett has retained the 119th position. Tereza Mrdeža has progressed one place and Mirjana Lučić Baroni two. Mrdeža is the 215th best player in the world and Lučić Baroni 221st. 

At the top of the WTA ranking there are no changes. In first is Romanian player Simona Halep, in second is Danish player Caroline Wozniacki, and in third is American player Sloane Stephens.
