The tournament will be held at Jarun Lake June 20 – 25

In addition to INmusic Festival, Jarun Lake is a location of another big event starting today – European Beach Handball Championship. Even though the championship is not as high-profile as some other sports, Croatian teams have performed really well – Croatian men’s senior team has five medals (4 gold, 1 silver) and the women’s team is the only team with five medals (2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) in European Championships.

The championship is played on odd years and the first beach handball tournament was held in the Italian Isola di Ponza in 1992, the same year the Handball Organizing Committee was founded. The first international tournament was held in 1993 and was followed by the recognition of International Handball Federation (IHF) in 1994. Next major step in the sport’s history was the first European Beach Handball Championship in 2000.

In 2004 Croatia appeared for the first time on the European stage and lost against Russia in the finals, but then in 2007, the Croatian teams started their domination – four consecutive European titles for men’s team.
Croatia has the most medals in both men and women’s competitions: both teams have five medals, while other national teams have a maximum of four.

National teams of Croatia, Hungary, Russia and Norway played the pre-tournament on June 17 and 18. Watch the Croatian team prepare for the championship below:
