Hajduk and Rijeka Fail to Continue Europa League Dream

Daniela Rogulj

A shocking dismissal for both Hajduk and Rijeka in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Hajduk failed to advance to the playoff round of Europa League after painfully losing in Bucharest to FCSB 1:2 (0:0) in the second leg of the third round.

Both goals for FCSB were scored by Harlem Gnohere, the first of which was scored in the 55th minute from a penalty and the second in the third minute of extra time, while Ahmed Said scored a header for Hajduk off a perfect cross from Jairo in the 81st minute.

If the game remained 1:1, Hajduk would have advanced to the next round where they would play two matches against Rapid Wein, but an error by Hajduk goalkeeper Josip Posavac cost them their European dreams, along with their overall poor play, lack of aggression, and what seemed like their unwillingness to be on the pitch at all.

The result was no better from Rujevica where Rijeka failed to overcome Sarpsborg, losing 0:1 from a goal by Patrick Mortensen in the 84th minute.

Although Rijeka was the big favorite in the return match of the third round, the Norwegian club crushed Rijeka’s hopes of continuing their road to Europe. Matjaž Kek’s side dominated, however, but was unable to create any real opportunities. Most of the game saw a great fight for every ball, but without chances or dangerous shots.

Sarpsborg will fight against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League playoff round.
